Davey’s Bay Yacht Club hosted the 52nd Victorian Flying 15 Championships over the long weekend.

25 crews competed in the 9 race championship with two dropped races, sailing in predominately fresh to solid 15-18 knot conditions with two of the 9 races held in sub 6 knot winds.

Girlsail 2015 @ DBYC

26/2/2015

Picture
by Kate Harper - DBYC

76 Girls from 9 schools met at Davey’s Bay Yacht Club (DBYC) on a foggy Friday morning to participate in Girlsail. The 38 teams travelled from as far as Apollo Bay and Geelong.

Laser, 420, Optimist, Minnow, Int Cadet and Sabre sailors paired up to sail in Pacers as part of Girlsail, which was organised by Toorak College (TC) in association with DBYC on Friday 20th February 2015.

Girls were located on ‘changeover’ ribs anchored in the DBYC harbour and rotated through their rounds in quick succession.

The organising team ran two courses, enabling for plenty of quality sailing for all competitors.

In Division 1, the morning sessions saw just enough wind to allow preliminary rounds to be completed.  The afternoon provided consistent light winds to enable the two final series races to be completed.

In the Div 1 Gold Fleet, Apollo Bay SC took the early lead, but were out sailed in the finals rounds by the St Leonards team of Alice Silverster and Jessica Butters, with Toorak College pair Sophie Jackson and Jess Harper finishing a close second.  In Division 1, St Leonards take the overall team’s award with their teams placing in 1st, 3rd and 4th.

Division 1 Silver Fleet was won by the Firbank team of Bea Harris-Hart and Indigo Brighton-Knight.

In Division 2, due to some lighter winds on the course area, saw all preliminary rounds completed by mid afternoon and one finals series race completed.

Division 2 Gold Fleet was won by Chloe Harper and Ella Sayers from Toorak College.  In 2nd were the Geelong team of Emily Webb-Ware and Anna Gwuzdz.  Once again it was down to the last race for the top placings to be determined.

Division 2 Silver Fleet was won by the Toorak College team of Immi Webber and Milli Meldrum.

A great effort by a team of volunteers from DBYC, TC, Yachting Victoria (YV), Frankston Yacht Club, and individuals including; Lou Hutton, Cindy Tillbrook, John Middleton, Bill Bell, Alison Dale, Mel Hitchen-Haw, Geoff Eldridge, Ian Wall.

Sam England was the guest speaker, who was the recent Women’s Worlds Moth Champion and who also played a large part in developing Girlsail with TC and DBYC 9 years ago.

Special thanks to YV, Ranelagh Yacht Squadron and DBYC who supplied the pacers.

A fantastic day of sailing for all competitors in near perfect conditions.    All girls created the perfect school day memory; boats, water, sun and fun! Next Year there will be the 10th Girlsail regatta.

Sail Melbourne Wash Up......

18/12/2014

Picture
Congratulations to Jeni Danks-Lidgett on her Sail Melbourne appearance!  Her step back into an Olympic Class boat to assist a crew who is chasing the 'Rio' dream worked out seamlessly!  The girls gave Amelia Catt and her skipper a good run for their money.  Jen may have discovered a few new muscles but her smile never disappeared!

Sail Melbourne produced some days with very big winds.  Jack and Lloyd, Emma and Ted, Georgina and Mel, Jess, Zoe, Chloe and Karl are all to be congratulated on taking on the challenge of competing at this international regatta.  All will have learnt a lot and can bring these skills back to their home club of DBYC!

Sail Melbourne DBYC images and update.....

11/12/2014

Day 1 for the 420's and Opti DBYC Sailors saw very windy conditions.  The Opti sailors were challenged with VERY big seas and were lucky enough to get their two prescribed races in, whilst the 420's were held ashore.  Our 470 sailors (Day 3) were also held ashore, where plenty of socialising occurred.  The DBYC family pulled together to support our own DBYC Opti Sailor, Karl Skoglund, who took a nasty wack to the head from his boom, and was taken to hospital by ambulance.  Thankfully Karl will be ok!

Good Luck DBYC Sailors at Sail Melbourne

9/12/2014

Picture
DBYC will be represented across several fleets during this weeks Sail Melbourne.  Jeni Danks has stepped BACK into the 470 to support Jamie Ryan (NSW) for this regatta.  Jamie's regular skipper is injured and Jen has kindly agreed to help keep Jamie race fit.  Jen and Jamie will be competing against one of our great coaches from last season - Amelia Catt!  I believe Jacqui Gurr may also compete in the Women's 470 Division - stay tuned!  Jack LIdgett and Lloyd Collins will be completing in the Men's 470 class.  Georgina Blochlinger and Mel Hitchen-Haw will be pairing up for the first time to compete in the 420 division and will be joined by Emma and Ted.  Jess, Zoe, Chloe and Karl will be competing in the Optimist Division.  Good luck to all the DBYC sailors and special best wishes to Jen.  The spectator viewing from the SYC deck is pretty special.... drop in and have a look....

Sail Country - A Success

17/11/2014

In it's inaugural year, Sail Country at Albury Wodonga Yacht Club over Melbourne Cup Weekend was a huge success.  The DBYC team of Opti Sailors Jess and Zoe, and 420 team Emma and Ted, enjoyed camping with the cows, by the very large Lake Hume.  Despite thoughts the Lake might not produce much wind, all were surprised with winds on Saturday up to a constant 24 knots with significant gusts!  The bullets that ran consistently over the weekend were testing for many sailors.  Parents and sailors were treated to the best of country hospitality - thanks AWYC.  This is a must for all Opti, 420, and Laser sailors for 2015!
