Commodore's Report
Club status and 24-25 Season notes, provided by Commodore Cam Taylor to the 2025 Elections General Meeting (3rd May 2025)
They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery so to re-use Couttsey's opening paragraph from last year sums up our feelings… “what has been another busy and challenging season, I can report that the club remains in a solid position on all fronts. Membership development, future planning, financial management, school programs, securing regattas, event scheduling, sponsorship, policy development, govt liaison, club communications, race support rostering…all on top of the weekly training and competition management means the club has been active at all levels, and activity is the lifeblood of our club!”
Finns The Finns have had a great season growing numbers yet again, good consistent sailing and midweek training. One of the recent sessions, a reach back from Frankston, was said to be the best sailing some guys had ever had. A handful of the guys are away at the moment, hopefully on Zoom, taking part from Port Stephens at the NSW Finn Championships, we wish you well
Flying Fifteens DBYC hosted the F15 Nationals at Christmas and a big thankyou to all of the effort from our volunteers which made this event and our club a showcase to the visitors. We had an awesome turnout of fourteen F15’s competing from our club. With a couple of standout results with yours truly and Sue coming in at a credible 3rd place and Lewis and John close behind in 4th. A special mention to Sam & David Danks scoring sixth position with their proud Mum & Dad, Jeni & Pete in 9th. We also hosted the re-run of the F15 State Championships in March which was another fabulous event once again showcasing the talent of DBYC sailors that dominated the fleet. Well done to Doug and Rod for taking out the Handicap Trophy Australian Sailing Programs As a committee we decided to join Australian Sailing as a Discover Sailing Centre which allowed us to utilise their resources and help grow our junior and adult programs. We also hired two part time international coaches, Molly and Jacob. Although our coaches have finished, we wish them well in their endeavours and thank them for a job well done. Our Club Captain's report contains further details about the 24-25 season.
Building the Fleets Moving forward we will continue to build the junior and youth fleets as we have great, well maintained, resources in the Opti and Pacer fleets and if all goes well, we should be hosting the State Pacer Championships next March. We welcome Sally Radnell to our committee and as a budding Pacer sailor I am confident she will lead DBYC Pacers to the start line. Our Rear Commodore / Regatta Manager has had a very busy season not only competing at our F15 events but also running our school sailing programs and school sailing events. This year in conjunction with one of our major partners, Toorak College, we hosted the 20th edition of Girlsail which I believe is the biggest all girl sailing event in the country. The Middleton Schools Regatta was also successfully run along with Super Saturday. Thank you to Sue, our race committee, Richard, Glenys, Kate and Anna, along with all of the volunteers that helped make these events work so well. This coming season we will continue to build our relationship with Ranelagh and re-invigorate The Snark Trophy.
Committee All of the committee play a special part in running the club and I individually thank all of you for your contributions: Matt Barry, Vice Commodore, Memberships, Communications, Newsletter organiser and funny meme man Sue Thompson, Rear Commodore / Regatta Manager, as mentioned before all the sailing stuff that nobody sees but everyone enjoys Victoria Ceban, Junior Sailing Coordinator, Opti Mum, Galley helper and one of our newest sailors Gary Cameron, Club Captain, race results, sailing instructions and all of the paperwork behind the scenes Dave Streader, Treasurer, keeping us financial and looking after our portfolio which is in great shape Tony Perkin, Secretary, Opti Dad, communications, back of house documentation, compliance Leigh Cummin, Maintenance Officer, keeping the club in great shape and overseeing the future proofing of our assets. Overseeing the automation of Rob’s Way which should start in a couple of weeks Tony Nash, we say goodbye from the committee and thank him for many years of service both on and off the water. He is not completely bereft of duty as he will join the new sailing committee imparting his depth of knowledge. Thank you again for your contribution. Sponsorship Tonight we thank our major sponsor The Bendigo Bank and graciously accept their donation towards our new RHIB. Their sponsorship goes a long way supporting the replacement of our safety fleet and we personally thank Alex, Reagan and Justin
Club Captain's Report
Wrap-up of DBYC sailing activities, provided by Club Captain Gary Cameron
The 2024 - 2025 season has seen a lot of activity at the club with organised sailing frequently on 5 days a week with:
Mondays - Toorak College Sailing (Teams and Learn to Sail);
Wednesday – Peninsula Grammar or John Middleton Teams Racing and Finn’s informal sail;
Friday – Tackers / Sail Training
Saturday – Peninsula Grammar and Adult Learn to Sail; and
Sunday – Club Racing
On top of this the club has run (or tried to) the:
Ossie Mac;
Flying Fifteen states (twice); and
Flying Fifteen Nationals.
Our club sailors have also actively supported their respective classes with significant travel representing the club in ILCAs, FINNs, Fireballs and 420s and the ad hoc 505, FD and Coutta Boat regattas.
Club Racing The club racing typically consists of two phases. The first is short course racing to iron out the winter cobwebs by running 5 very short two lap races in October which helps sort out crew work. This is the John Madden Sprint Series, and we managed to get 17 of the planned 20 races completed. After this first phase we move into the Club Championship and Aggregate Series which is interspersed with Trophy Races. This phase started to run into weather issues similar to what we have experienced over the last two seasons. Of the 26 Club Championship races scheduled the weather only allowed for 12 to be completed with the day either a flat calm or howling gale. As far as the Trophy Events are concerned there are 5 trophy events of which only 2 were completed despite continuous rescheduling. In terms of numbers, we had:
12 Finns;
13 Flying Fifteen teams; and
A range of others in Pacers, Lasers and Optis racing over the season.
Club Junior Program and Training This season the committee decided to employ two professional coaches / instructors to try to reinvigorate the training side of the club. As a result, we had Molly and Jacob with us and my personal impressions of their efforts was fantastic. They hit the ground running and expanded the usual junior program to also include adult programs. Some members pushed for Friday night junior programs, so this became a standard feature of the season.
Junior & Youth Sailing For the 2024-25 season we have 63 juniors on our books, either as club members or participants in this season’s Tackers programs. Of these, 39 (62%) are DBYC Junior or Family members. The gender split is 44% female and 56% male—slightly more balanced than the national average for under-24s according to Australian Sailing (approximately 60% male and 40% female). Our junior sailing calendar was busy and diverse, offering a broad range of programs across the season:
Pre-Christmas
A 6-week Tackers 1 program ran on Friday nights.
On Sundays, we offered Tackers 1 & 2 and Adventure Sailing (non-competitive, social and fun) in the morning, followed by Race Coaching in the afternoon for our more experienced sailors.
January
We ran three 3-day intensive programs for juniors at various skill levels.
Post-School Return
We launched our first 6-week Tiny Tackers program on Friday nights, with five enthusiastic tykes. This was a great success, and we believe we are the only club locally offering this program format.
We continued our Friday evening Tackers 1 & 2 sessions.
Sunday mornings featured Tackers 1 & 2, while Adventure Sailing took place in the afternoon, with the kids now confidently transitioning into Pacers.
Over the season, our coaches delivered an impressive 114 junior sailing sessions, reflecting the strength and growth of our junior programs.
Regattas The club:
Successfully ran the Flying Fifteen Nationals over the first week of January with 30 boats competing.
Successfully ran the Flying Fifteen Victorian Championship in late March after failing to even get on the water at the first attempt in November due to the weather.
As mentioned previously the first attempt at the Flying Fifteen Victorian Championships and the Ossie Mac failed due to weather but the effort in organising a regatta is basically the same whether you get onto the water or not, so for the organisers and volunteers, it was the equivalent of running four events.
School Sailing School sailing consists of three main areas which are:
GirlSail
Schools Teams racing practice and Learn to Sail; and
The interschool Teams Racing which consist of 5 schools this year.
GirlSail was the 20th year it has been run and this year had perfect weather. With the combination of DBYC and Ranelagh boats we were able to run the 12 Division 1 teams as a single fleet which meant they completed 10 fleet races for the day with NO DROPS. The Division 2 Fleet of 12 needed to share the remaining 6 boats so the teams completed between 4 and 6 races. The Schools Teams racing has a significant presence during the week and it culminates in the Victorian Championship held around the end of term 1. This year it was held at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. Teams that compete at DBYC on Wednesday were represented at the Victorian Championship with Woodleigh finishing 3rd in Division 1 and Toorak College 1st in Division 2. Next year we would like to follow a similar path to this year, particularly with the employment of coaches but this is a decision still to be made. We have the Pacer State Titles to run and there are some Try 420 Days being planned over the winter so look out for those.
